What does crisis mean?

‘Crisis’ can describe many different situations and can be different for everyone. For those experiencing a mental health problem, it could mean a time when you need urgent help, where you feel unable to keep yourself or another person safe.

You may have felt this way before and know where to get help, or it could be the first time you’ve felt this way.

Different things might work for you at different times, such as speaking to someone you trust, calling a helpline, making a doctor’s appointment, or going to A&E.

The important thing to know is help is available. You won’t be wasting anyone’s time if you ask for support.

There are different types of support available depending on what you need.

You could:

  • tell someone you trust like a family member, friend or support worker if you’re not sure what to do or need support to get help
  • call a helpline and speak to someone who is trained to listen and help you get the right support.
  • make an appointment with your doctor or call 111 who can put you through to the local mental health advice and support line for advice if you’re not in immediate danger
  • call 999 or go to your local A&E if you’ve tried to hurt yourself or are unable to keep yourself safe
  • or contact an urgent mental health service for specialist advice and support if you feel you are experiencing an acute mental health crisis
