Complementary Feeding in Children and Young People

Complementary feeding or weaning is introducing solid foods in addition to your baby’s milk feeds. Babies develop at different rates so begin when your baby is ready – around six months.

Symptoms of complementary feeding in children:

It is important to consider whether your baby is showing signs they are ready to wean. These include:

  • Staying in a sitting position, holding their head steady
  • Coordinating their eyes, hands and mouth so they can look at their food, pick it up and put it in their mouth
  • Swallowing food (rather than spitting it back out)

The NHS start for life website has some excellent videos and resources to help with weaning
