Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) Skills

Some Interventions are skills.

Skills are taught by professionals within the service to keep you feeling safe.

Each skill has a name:

Alternatives to self-harm can teach you how to manage your self-harm in a safer way, that does not result in you hurting yourself physically. We teach distraction, we introduce achievable goal setting and use phone apps to help you track your progress.

Distress Tolerance is how we respond and manage emotional, stressful situations that can feel overwhelming in our lives. We can help you learn about your own tolerance and help manage this if you become a risk to yourself or others. We can teach you breathing techniques, freezing out your thoughts using cold packs and exercise activities in the community.

Mindfulness is paying full attention to an activity, concentrating on our five senses and being aware. We can do mindfulness through colouring, walking, cooking, and riding a bike.

Grounding means to bring your focus to what is happening to you physically, instead of being trapped by the thoughts in your mind that are causing you to feel anxious, sad or angry. We can create a soothe box with you to help ground your emotions. A soothe box is a box made with a selection of things inside that help you feel safe and comforted.

Emotional regulation is the how we manage our emotions and how we react to feeling our emotions. We explore this in more detail with you by looking at some mood cards to identify each emotion and how this is felt in the body.
