Tube feeding in Children and Young People

Tube feeding may be necessary if your child is not able to meet their nutritional needs orally.

The essential nutrients your child needs are provided by a specialised formula given through a tube directly into the stomach or small intestine.

The length of tube feeding will be dependant on your child’s condition. There are a few types of feeding tubes available, and your paediatric surgeon will determine which one is best for your child. The type of tube your child will receive depends on the underlying medical condition, the length of time that tube feeding will be needed, and on your child’s gastrointestinal tract function.

How can a dietitian help?

Once a feeding tube is placed, support is provided by your children’s dietitian team.

Equipment and feed queries will be dealt with via Nutricia homeward – Monday to Friday 8.00am – 8.00pm or Saturday 9.00am – 1.00pm on 0800 093 3672.
