Frequently Asked Questions

Below you’ll find answers to the questions we get asked about the CAMHS Eating Disorder Service

Appointments

Will I be seen by my family or by myself?

The frequency of appointments, and who they are for, is something that will be planned with you and your family, with your key worker. There will be opportunity for both family and individual appointments.

How do I rearrange an appointment?

You will be given contact details for the team and your key worker, so if an appointment needs rearranging you will have the details to do that.

What do I do if I miss an appointment?

We will make sure that we follow up and rearrange any missed appointments.

Advice from our team for parents and caregivers

How can I support someone with an eating disorder?

What practical steps can I take to provide assistance and encouragement to a friend or family member going through this challenge?

Do not be afraid to talk to your child about what you have noticed.

Find a calm time outside of meal times to ask them whether they have noticed the same things about themselves. Letting them know that you have noticed is what is important at this point – it won’t necessarily change what is happening, but it may give you more of a sense of whether there is a significant problem.

Continue to have the same expectations about what your child eats, and how they eat. Do not be tempted to reduce portions sizes or introduce small plates or cutlery.

Try to keep calm, even if your child gets angry.

Be mindful of what your child might be accessing on social media and online.

Talk to your child’s school about whether they have noticed any changes – issues with friends, distractibility etc.

Most importantly, contact us and let your child know you will be doing so. Our admin team will take your details and a clinician will call you back within 24 hours, and usually on the same day. We will have an initial phone conversation with you about your concerns, and also talk to your child if possible

Our aim is to establish whether we can offer the most appropriate level of help and support or signpost you to an alternative service. We are here to talk with you about the concerns you have and work out the best way of helping, so please do not hesitate to call us.
