Frequently Asked Questions

What causes ADHD?

The exact cause of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is not fully understood. The condition has been shown to run in families and research has also identified several possible differences in the brains of people with ADHD when compared with those without the condition.

Is ADHD a new condition?

ADHD is NOT a new condition.

The term ADHD may have been agreed relatively recently but its symptoms have been recognised for many years. The poem _ The Story of Fidgety Philip - written in 1865 by German physician Heinrich Hoffman is perhaps the first known description of a child exhibiting many of the symptoms we have now come to accept as helping to define ADHD.

From this date, there are many other examples. In 1980, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder established it for the first time.
