Autism Assessments for Children Under 5 Years Old

The assessment team includes Speech and Language Therapists, Clinical Psychologists, Paediatricians, Autism Specialists and Assistant Practitioners.

The team may also link with other key professionals that know the child such as health visitors, Portage Workers, SENCO’s and social workers.

Children can be referred via the Neurodevelopmental Front Door Team or the Speech and Language Therapy Service. The referrals are screened by designated professionals.

Where do assessments take place?

Children can be seen in a clinic at the Walker Street Centre. They may need to be seen outside of clinic if further assessment is required.

Some children may take the Dual Assessment pathway. This is only if the child has been accepted for an Autism Assessment and is also waiting for their Initial Assessment with Speech and Language Therapy.

What is the assessment process?

Questionnaires are sent to the family and their educational setting to complete. The questionnaires give carers and professionals a chance to write down as much information as possible about the child’s interaction, communication, play, routines and interests.

The questionnaires are an important part of the assessment. Please give as much detail as possible when filling them in.

Once the questionnaires have been sent back to the team, the information is organised into appropriate sections that start to build a profile of the child’s developmental skills in key areas.

An appointment is then arranged for your child to be seen in clinic. If the child is having their dual assessment (Autism Assessment and Speech and Language together), they may be seen in their setting.

What happens in the clinic appointment?

Clinic appointments are a play-based assessment with at least two clinicians. They give us the chance to see your child play and ask you any additional questions. Assessments typically last up to an hour.

What happens if we are waiting for the assessment?

If you have any questions about your child after you have been accepted on the waiting list, please contact our duty telephone number.

Clinical Appointments with Private Providers

We have lots of requests for assessments of Autism and ADHD which means long waiting lists.

To help us support children to be seen quicker we work with private providers who complete assessments for us.

Sometimes they will do full virtual appointment or face to face assessments.

Sometimes we work jointly and they do part of the assessment and the team from Humber does the other half.

We choose our private providers carefully and review them on a regular basis.

If the child is suitable to be seen by a private provider their parent/carer will receive a text message asking for consent for the child’s information to be shared with the private company.

If you are not happy about your child being seen by a private provider please contact us.
