What happens when there is no diagnosis?

Sometimes the children/young people we see will not get a diagnosis of autism and/or ADHD.

After an assessment the reasons for the young person not receiving a diagnosis will be explained to the family.  Some examples of these reasons are listed below:

  • The child/young person’s presentation doesn’t fit with all the required criteria for Autism or ADHD.
  • The child/young person acts differently at home and school so there isn’t a clear picture across two settings.
  • There are other reasons for a child to act the way they do, for example an intellectual disability or they are coping with things in their life that are affecting their emotions, behaviour and social anxiety.

These reasons will be explained in the feedback meeting. Further referrals to other services, strategies and ideas will be discussed to support the young person and family.

For further information about what happens when there is no diagnosis, please contact the service.
