Frequently asked questions

Below you’ll find answers to the questions we get asked about the Children’s Physiotherapy Service

I have an appointment but I am not able to attend, what should I do?

Please contact the team on 01482 336 774 as soon as possible to rearrange your appointment. Cancellations on the day will be considered a ‘was not brought’ event and may trigger our attendance and safeguarding policy. Recurrent cancellations and non attendances will be managed in line with our attendance and safeguarding policy and may result in discharge or referral to social care for assessment of possible safeguarding needs.

Referral

How and who can refer to physiotherapy?

If you are concerned about your child and feel they may need a referral to physiotherapy, please seek advice from your GP or an appropriate health practitioner who may already be involved with your child’s care.

Things you may be concerned about that a physiotherapist can help with may included:

  • Delayed developmental milestones eg not rolling, sitting, crawling or walking when you would normally expect.
  • Differences in how my child uses one side of the body compared to the other
  • Loss of skills that they previously had
  • Pain
  • Change in walking pattern
  • Difficulty achieving functional tasks
  • Concerns raised from others involved in your child’s care eg teachers or carers.

Please discuss any concerns you may have with a GP or other appropriate health practitioner to identify what assessment, investigations or support you first may need before seeing a physiotherapist.

My child has been referred to physiotherapy, what happens now?

If your child meets the children’s physiotherapy referral criteria, a booking letter will be sent out for you to arrange an initial triage appointment with a physiotherapist. Please refer to the Clinics and Assessments section in the main part of the home page for more information.

If you have been offered an appointment, or have received a letter or text message to request contact to book an appointment and we do not hear back from you within 2 weeks, we will discharge your child back to the referrer/GP. Following this, if your child still requires physiotherapy intervention then they will require a re-referral to the service.

Appointments

I can’t remember when my next appointment is, what do I do?

Please contact the children’s physiotherapy team on 01482 336774 and a member of the team will be able to help with any queries.

Who do I contact if I have missed an appointment?

If you have missed an appointment and would like to re-arrange, please contact our physiotherapy team on 01482 336774 as soon as you become aware that you have missed an appointment.

Please respond promptly to receipt of a ‘warning of discharge letter’. Contact after the advised date may lead to discharge and the need to request a new referral from your original referrer.

Recurrent cancellations and non attendances will be managed in line with our attendance and safeguarding policy and may result in discharge or referral to social care for assessment of possible safeguarding needs.

My child has been discharged, how do I get a re-referral back to physiotherapy?

If you remain concerned about your child and feel they may need a re-referral to physiotherapy then please seek advice from your GP or an appropriate health professional who is involved with your child’s care.

What is “Open Access”?

Open access is for those children who do not require active support/input from a member of the physiotherapy team but can continue to access our service directly without the need for a new referral as we know that it is likely that you may need ad hoc support for your child’s long term condition.

Either yourself, a professional at your child’s school or another health professional who cares for your child may contact us at any time to request support or review.

An open access period may be set for a specific period of time or until your child reaches 18 when they will be discharged or transferred to adult services.

Your physiotherapist will advise you on how long your specific open access period will last for.

If you do not contact the team within this period of time, the physiotherapy team will assume there are no new concerns and will discharge your child from the service.

Should any future concerns arise after your child has been discharged, you will require a re-referral to the physiotherapy team from your GP or appropriate healthcare professional.

Open access may be appropriate for your child for the following reasons:

  • When your child’s current physiotherapy goals have been achieved but your child has a condition which may change.
  • When your child has made appropriate progress for their stage of development and no longer needs active support.
  • While you are awaiting surgery and may need input after surgery has been completed.
  • If there is poor attendance or participation in a physiotherapy programme then a physiotherapist may recommend open access for a time until you are able to better engage with advice and input.

Orthotics

How do I make an orthotic appointment?

To book an orthotic appointment please contact: 01482 336774

What do I do if my child’s splint is not fitting or is causing a problem?

If your child’s orthotic provision (splint/insoles/boots etc) is causing a red mark on the skin and this disappears within 20 minutes of removing the orthoses, then please do not be concerned. However this should be monitored. If the red marks last longer than 20 minutes, please contact the physiotherapy team to book an orthotic appointment for a review of the orthotic provision.

If your child’s orthotic provision (splint/insoles/boots etc) is causing a blister on the skin then remove the orthoses, to prevent further pressure on the blister, and contact the physiotherapy team to arrange an orthotic appointment to review the splint.

It is the responsibility of the child’s parents to contact the physiotherapy team to arrange orthotic appointments for reviews. If your child’s feet have grown and they require a larger shoe size, it is likely that they will require a review from orthotics for their orthotic provision. If your child has a splint, you must regularly check that this is fitting well. If the splint looks too tight around the foot, ankle, or leg or the child’s toes are coming to the end of the splint then you should contact the Physiotherapy Team to book an orthotic review appointment.
