Support offered by our Epilepsy Specialist Nurses

We can support with the management of complex epilepsy for adults with learning disability and epilepsy.

This can include:

  • looking at medication
  • making sure health conditions are well managed, as these can make seizure worse
  • referring to other professionals who might be able to help

We do not diagnose Epilepsy following a first seizure. If you have a seizure for the first time you need to go to hospital.

The Neurologist there will look at tests to work out if the seizure was caused by Epilepsy or something else. If it is epilepsy and they think we can help they will refer you over to us if you agree.

Frequency of Contact

How often we contact you will depend on individual need.

Appointments and reviews can be face to face, via video-call or over the telephone.

Face to face clinics are at East Riding Community Hospital in Beverley.

The Epilepsy Specialist Nurses can carry out home visits.

As we don’t hold a waiting list we have a high caseload. We work to be adaptive to the individual's needs. Epilepsy is a lifelong condition that can fluctuate. There may be times where we are very much involved in care and others less so. We understand this is the nature of supporting someone who has Epilepsy. You may be discharged back to your GP if your epilepsy is stable.
