Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Below you’ll find answers to the questions we get asked about the Community team for Learning Disabilities (CTLD)

What is the difference between learning disabilities and learning difficulties?

A learning disability is not the same as a learning difficulty. People with a learning difficulty have problems with only one or two things. Usually, some part of reading or writing or number work; something which showed up at school but it is only in that one area that the person has difficulty.

What age do I need to be to access the service?

You must be over 18 years old to use this service.

How can I make a referral?

Please see our referral page for further information.

How will referrals be accepted?

Referrals will be accepted if:

  • There is a physical or mental health need that requires support from specialist learning disability services over and above what can be offered through mainstream services
  • There is evidence that the person meets the criteria of having a learning disability (see above)
What will happen if my referral is not accepted?

If we do not accept a referral, the referrer will be contacted to discuss why and be offered help with finding a different service.

How long will I wait?

Once a referral has been accepted you will be put onto a waiting list. Following a referral, you will receive waiting list letter. Each team has a different waiting list and therefore waiting times will vary.

Waiting lists are reviewed regularly. If circumstances change, please contact the team to share the information to update the referral.

What will happen to my information? Will what I say remain confidential?

We will always explain about how we look after your information. We often need to talk to other people who work in the team and your GP, but we will ask you if that is okay and we will not share information without your permission, unless we are very worried about you or someone else.

Do I need to make a referral if I receive support from the children's team?

If you are receiving support in the children's service, and feel you require ongoing support from adult services, please discuss the person currently supporting you. They can then make a referral to us on your behalf. You can also can self-refer.
