Hull Children's Wellbeing Practitioners

What We Do

What We Do

We are Children’s Wellbeing Practitioners, or CWP’s.

We’re trained to support children and young people with mild to moderate anxieties and low mood by using short-term Low-Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy.

Sometimes young people can get stuck in an unhelpful cycle of negative thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. We help them change that cycle by developing the skills they need to feel better, and to manage their mental health independently.

We offer one‑to‑one sessions and group sessions for young people. We also run parent‑led sessions for parents who want support to help their child with worries or anxiety.

For one-to-one sessions, support is offered over 8-12 sessions with each session lasting up to an hour.

What do we mean by ‘mild to moderate’?

  • Early onset – difficulties have started within the last 6 months or so
  • Young person is still managing to engage in their normal routines at least some of the time such as seeing friends, washing and bathing, going to the shops etc…
  • Difficulties without current or past significant complexities that are impacting current mental health (for example: attachment issues, trauma, bereavement, witnessing domestic violence, previous abuse or neglect)
  • Noticeable changes which are not having a significant impact on their daily life (e.g. not feeling able to leave their room, constant self-harming or thoughts of ending their life)
  • There are not lots of previous referrals in which the young person has had interventions from other teams or early intervention

What kind of issues can we work with?

  • Low mood
  • Panic
  • General anxiety/social anxiety
  • Simple phobias such as a fear of dogs, spiders etc.
  • Mild OCD (e.g. handwashing, double-checking things are locked)
  • Separation anxiety
  • Low level self-harm/suicidal ideation

What do we not work with?

  • Trauma
  • Long-term difficulties (impacting for a number of years)
  • High-risk young people (e.g. lots of self-harm and suicidal ideation, risk of violence to others)
  • Attachment difficulties
  • Bereavement
  • Family difficulties, such as coming to terms with parental separation
  • ARFID and disordered eating
  • Anger management/violence and aggression
  • We will also not work with a young person if they are already getting similar support from elsewhere (e.g. private therapy or counselling) until that support ends
