How to Refer

The Humber Sensory Processing Service is a specialist service providing support to children who have sensory processing differences. This service is for children with a Hull or East Riding GP. The Sensory Processing Service is a small team of sensory trained therapists. The therapists provide advice and formal sensory processing assessments (criteria requirement for formal assessment).

The service also hosts this website and provides training about sensory processing difficulties. Referrals for the service are to be completed by a registered health or social care professional. The referral form is available on this website, on the Humber Teaching NHS Foundation Trust website or on the Local Offer page. The service operates Monday to Friday 9-5.

Service Criteria

  • The child or young person must be aged between 0 and 18 years
  • The child or young person must be registered to a GP located in Hull or the East Riding of Yorkshire
  • The referral is completed by a registered health or social care professional
  • The caregiver has consented to the referral
  • Sensory processing differences are having a significant impact on the child’s/young person’s mental health and/or physical well-being in more than one environment
  • Sensory processing differences are severe, longstanding and are having a direct impact on their daily functioning

Sensory Processing Pathway

Stage 1
Sensory Processing Hub

Access the Humber Sensory Processing Hub (website) to further understand how sensory processing differences impact the child/young person. Read about the 8 sensory systems, access the resources, and implement relevant strategies at home and in the learning environment.

Stage 2
Advice & Consultation

Stage 1 completed – It is identified that further support is required and a referral is made to the Sensory Processing Service (service criteria to be met). If the referral is accepted and criteria met, a telephone appointment will be offered to provide advice and consultation. This can include targeted strategies and invitations to workshops. Once parent/carer is equipped with these targeted strategies they will be advised to contact the service by email within three months if further support is required for a follow up consultation.

Stage 3
Further Assessment

Additional sensory processing assessment is identified as a need by one of the Therapists. A face to face clinic appointment will be offered.
It should also be noted that ‘Sensory Processing Disorder’ is not recognised as an independent diagnosis in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 (DSM-5).
