Townend Court Inpatient Unit

Admission

The admission process

When the person you care for is admitted to hospital, it can be a challenging and difficult time. We want you to feel supported and remain involved as much as possible.

We recognise that carers, family and friends can be important to our patients and their recovery. With a patients consent, we will involve family and carers as much as possible in their care.

We encourage you to attend the review meetings, but please be aware that this will be guided by your family member/friend’s wishes.

Support and advice for carers from City Health Care Partnership:

Everyone’s admission to the ward is different. The admission process is outlined below but each admission, assessment and treatment is done in a person centred way and based on the needs of the individual. If you are admitted:

  • You will come to the unit with a staff member you know and / or family
  • A member of the team will greet you at the entrance
  • Section papers are signed between the doctors, approved mental health practitioner and the staff nurse
  • You will be seen by one of our junior doctors on arrival
  • We will be introduced to the team on shift and the other patients
  • You will be given a tour around the unit and shown your bedroom
  • You can unpack your belongings if you wish or one of the team can support you with this
  • One member of the team will read your section rights to you and these will be repeated again the following day
  • There will be time to sit and ask any questions you may have with our team
  • We will then arrange for the doctor to see you as soon as possible

What to bring
with you

  • Comfortable clothing

  • Toiletries, such as shampoo, conditioner, body wash, toothbrush and toothpaste

  • Personal items that matter to you such as toys, book, radio and photos (no glass photo frames)

  • You can bring your own electrical devices. These will need to be charged in the office, but will be given back to you once charged. The team will share the wi-fi details

  • Some items may be controlled or restricted and would require a risk assessment. This could include sharp objects and wired items

  • The staff team will complete a list of all the property and items you have brought onto the unit

  • There is a safe which is located in the reception which can be used for personal items and larger amounts of money

  • There is also a locked drawer in the nursing office on each unit where valuables can be stored and small amount of money (maximum of £50). We also store personal care items including razors here

  • Please make sure any items you bring in are labelled (including clothing)

The Human Rights Act helps to make sure that basic rights are met.

You and the staff members can decide how often you would like your rights reading. This could be daily, weekly, monthly etc.

On admission you will be referred to Cloverleaf Advocacy for a Independent Mental Health Advocate (IMHA).

An Independent Mental Health Advocate is an advocate who understands the Mental Health Act.

They help people understand their rights under the Mental Health Act and speak up about what they want and need.

A person has the right to challenge the decision to be on the unit, if they do not think they should be. They can speak to the unit manager and apply for a tribunal.

A tribunal is a panel of people who can make a decision about whether a person still needs to be on section in an Assessment and Treatment Unit.
